About the BMI Calculator

BMI, or body mass index, is a screening measure based on height and weight. This version uses pounds and feet/inches for a quick adult BMI estimate.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your height in feet and inches.
  2. Enter your weight in pounds.
  3. Review the calculated BMI.
  4. Use the category as general screening information, not a diagnosis.

How the calculation works

For US customary units, BMI is calculated as weight in pounds multiplied by 703, divided by height in inches squared.

Example

For an adult who is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds, the calculator returns a BMI and the corresponding standard adult category.

Things to keep in mind

  • BMI does not directly measure body fat.
  • Muscle mass, age, body composition, and other factors can affect interpretation.
  • BMI categories are intended as screening ranges for adults.
  • For children and teens, BMI interpretation uses age- and sex-specific growth charts.
